Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our speech & language services

At what age should we start speech therapy?

It's never too early to get in touch. We can determine over an initial phone call if it is the right time to work on your concerns and if an assessment is the right next step.

Speech and language milestones will be considered, and home programming is an option in some situations. When in doubt—reach out.

What does a speech and language assessment look like?

The assessment will vary based on the age and needs of your child. It may include:

  • Formal Testing: A formal assessment that provides standardized scores.
  • Informal Assessment: This includes observation during play and conversation.
  • Parent Interview: Your input is invaluable. A child may not do something in the assessment visit that you know they can do. Your concerns and observations at home are greatly considered when establishing goals and programming.

Just as in therapy, we try to make assessment day as comfortable and fun as possible. Breaks and games are included to ensure that we are getting accurate test results.

What does speech-language therapy look like?

It is important to us that your child enjoys coming to see us. We use a variety of toys and games to ensure that learning is fun and enjoyable.

How long and frequent are therapy sessions?

Typically sessions are 45 minutes to an hour in length and are held on a weekly basis. 30 minute sessions are also available for children that do better with shorter visits.

The frequency and duration of therapy depends on specific needs, age, and the nature of the communication challenges. We regularly review progress and may adjust frequency over time.

How long will my child need therapy?

Therapy duration depends on the child's age, diagnosis, and consistency with sessions and home practice.

Does OHIP cover speech and language services?

Unfortunately, no. Many insurance plans provide coverage for speech and language therapy. Check with your provider to determine if speech-language therapy is included in your benefits package. We provide detailed receipts that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement. The coverage amount varies depending on your specific plan. Some insurance plans may require a referral from a physician, while others do not.

Do I need a doctor's referral for speech therapy?

No. A doctor's referral is not needed to start therapy; however, some insurance plans may require a referral, so it is best to check with your provider.
